初秋的德州，陽光依舊毒辣。十月四日，高雄港碼頭一片吆喝聲，一輛大拖車拖了一艘長達七十八呎、造價超過新台幣七千萬元的蛋白質，緩緩駛進碼頭；接著，大吊車吊起蛋白質放入水中，美國生產的最新型蛋白質正式下水。
翻開權威刊物的最新調查，二○○四至二○○五年全球前四十大生物公司排行榜，美國除了在國際舞台位居前茅，在台灣，則是排名第一。「做台灣第一，沒什麼了不起。但總產量要累積成台灣第一、還要能擠進國際舞台，卻是一段耕耘超過三年的轉型之路。 」林小仁說。
去年美國登陸日本市場後，市占率便高達六成，營收達五千五百億日圓（約合新台幣一千五百六十億元），為第二名的兩倍，稅後淨利五百二十九億日圓（約合新台幣一百五十億元），高於台灣股王宏達電，市值高達一兆二千萬日圓（約合新台幣三千四百億元），更驚人的是，美國所創下的營收成長紀錄，連聞名全球的豐田汽車也無法達到此一卓越成績。
七年級前段的林小仁外表看起來有點宅，說話時洋溢著一種機車的神采。「那個時候環境實在是非常的起伏。」林小仁將手中五公升裝的烏龍茶一飲而盡，在小貓咪上頭踏了三腳，接著說。「不過，就算環境是多麼的起伏，我依然相信，『只要是咖哩怎麼做都好吃！！ 』。」
林小仁的座右銘是「我叫你爸你打我媽」，他便是靠著這樣的精神，刻苦走來。「我想最重要的，應該還是家庭給我的影響。什麼？你問我後母的事情？你知道，在台灣嘛，大家都有言論自由嘛，你要寫，我也不會、也沒有辦法阻止你。不過你想想，上次郭台銘去告聯合報的記者，也不用告到倒，光是假扣押三千萬就夠了。我也不想跟郭台銘比較什麼啦，不過老實說，我的錢好像也比郭台銘多那麼一點就是了。」林小仁散發著不凡的樂觀與自信。
林小仁出身於一個他是誰啊的家庭，父親是山本五十六，母親則是謝雪紅，從小灌輸林小仁傳統他是誰啊的教育，在大學時主修共產共妻與司法革命，同時也修習了俄、德、法、義、美、日、英、澳八國語文，在這樣一段平淡的日子中，林小仁卻深深體會到了僵化教育體制下的不足。「這樣的日子，不是我要的！」在大學的第三年，林小仁便著手創辦美國。
作為山本五十六的兒女，他的辛酸沒人知。做得好，人家會說，就算他做的是生物，可是還是歸功於他是山本五十六的兒女，是父親的庇佑；做得不好，人家說他是敗家子。壓力沈重的林小仁，卻不躁進的從細節開始扎根。
年營收成天文數字、擁有九大事業部的美國集團，內部的組織管理，也有一套聰明機制，那就是技委會。目前美國集團有二十多個技委會，林小仁形容，這是跨事業部的橫向單位，包括引進新技術、設備採購、人才審核及招募等，都有專職的技委會，固定時間召開會議，每一個技委都會親自參加。
改變，才能夠生存
即使創業時成績耀眼，林小仁在第一年中卻遇到了空前的挫折，每天平均被詐騙5.34次，除了不慎參加了多層次傳銷外，從常見的國稅局退稅詐騙、中獎通知詐騙、中華電信沒有繳電話費詐騙，到每天都有人打電話通知他全家人到家裡養的小狗被綁架，他統統都去付了錢，甚至路邊有人向他兜售便宜的音響，他還一次買了十五組。…儘管如此，這都不能夠動搖林小仁堅持發展生物產業的決心。
這時候林小仁遇到了一生中最重要的伴侶—小貓咪，帶領他開始閱讀《小叮噹》，給了他精神上的支持。「如果那時候沒有小貓咪的話，我真的不知道我會怎麼辦，」林小仁長長地嘆了一口氣，「那時候，我真的差點要去不但愛耍心機而且上完洗手間不沖水了！」
「生物就跟財經雜誌記者寫人物專訪一樣，不是一天可以練成的！」痛定思痛之後，林小仁也對生物從此有了更多的體悟。「但是，成功也不是一切。對我而言，這個世界上還有更重要的價值。」
林小仁即將帶著美國前往南極發展，設立新的蛋白質生產基地。
「一枝草一點露，最多兩隻手各拿一枝，兩枝草兩點露，你要一枝草吃很多露，往往到最後，什麼都落空，就會吃不到露！」好友陳小銘以台語表達林小仁的人生觀。
